Jöns Emanuel Eliasson and Wilhelmina Kristina Johansdotter (English)

1 november 1907 “the worker Jöns Emanuel Eliasson from Tand and the farmers daughter Wilhelmina Kristina Johansson from same place” were maried.

Banns were already 26 May, and 2 and 9 June, simultaneously with Jöns Emanuel’s three year older brother Anders Eliasson. But he marries already June 24 with Jenny Emerentia Persson also from Tand. Perhaps the plan was to arrange a double wedding?

Vilhelmina Johansson Jöns Emanuel Eliasson

Jöns and Wilhelmina has a son already, Olof Ingemar. He is 11 months old when the couple marries in November. Jöns and “Mina”, with son “Inge” as they are later called settles in his parents house in Tand. The small farm is located at Tand no 5, probably Tand 5:3 that is  here.

Jöns is six years younger than Mina. He is 21 years old when Inge is born and Mina is 27. In his parents’ home lives also his brother Anders and his wife (according to church records), but they are moving, perhaps directly after the marriage in June, to Jukkasjärvi.

Jöns was before Inge’s birth employed by the army. He took early enlistment and became, simultaneously with his brother Anders a volunteer in Feb 1903 at the Royal Jämtland Field Ranger Regiment with an assignment of three years from November 1903 to October 1906. His two oldest brothers, Olof and Göran also enlisted so all the brothers followed the same path. Olof (Olle) and Göran got the soldier names Alm and Palm which they kept as family names. Jöns and Anders both resigned in December 1906 at that time of Inge’s birth. Jöns was noted as worker, later as farm worker in the church records.

Mina grow up in a “better” home. Her father is Farmer and in the home is the local junior school located. His mother is the daughter of Sergeant Linderström and Wilhelmina Omnberg, who’s father, grandfather and grand grandfather were all priests. Also on her fathers father side we find “better” people, his grandmother is of the Wasell family where we have direct descendant of a priest, a district judge and a customs inspector.

The following year, August 20 1908, a second son is born. He is weak and suffering from some sort of stomach illness. September 1, he is baptized by the teacher Gertrud Jönsson and given the name Gunnar Folke Elis. He dies two days later, September 3. The reason the teacher Gertrud is called for this emergency baptism is, I guess, because junior school in Tand  is occasionally held at Minas parents farm not far from home. So she would be well known by the family. Perhaps that’s where she was the weeks after birth.

Next son is born Jan 4 1910. He is named Elis Folke, almost the same name as the baby they  lost the year before.

The year after, Jan 31 1911 they get a daughter. She is baptized  Ingrid Brita Elisabeth but will later always be called Elise. Present at the ceremony is Mina’s parents Johan Olof Johansson and Brita Stina.

Several of Jöns and Minas closest relatives live nearby. His parents are living at the same farm as they. He has also three sisters and three brothers. The two oldest brothers, Olle Alm and Göran Palm we find in Bjärme and Anders, mentioned before, is now back from Jukkasjärvi and living in Tand. The sisters are all married. The oldest sister Helena is living in Åre,  Elisabeth (Lisa) in Rödön and Kristina in Tand. The latter has five sons, the olders, Per Emanuel later becomes a journalist and writer with family name Tannér.

Minas parents live at their farm in Tand. There are also two of her sisters and two brothers, all unmarried. The third sister is married and living in Offerdal.

1914 the father of Jöns, Elias Olofsson dies, 72 years old. His mother stays on the farm until 1921 when she moves to her daughter Kristina’s family

Jöns brother Anders, also living in Tand, dies tragically 1915. He “suffered setbacks and took his own life” as his oldest brother Olle Alm has stated. In the church records there is a note that Anders on Feb 2 1915 “killed himself with a pistol, with a shot through his hart”

September 4, 1917 Mina gives birth to a son. He is probably premature because Mina is at this time not at home. I do not know where exactly, but the child is baptized “in emergency” just one week old on September 11 by the farmer Per Nord in Österskucku, Berg. The child who is given the name Johan Gunnar dies one day later, September 12. Birth and death dates are noted in Berg church records.

Jöns is said to have worked with lime production. There were two early stationary lime kilns in Tand where lime was burned in relatively large scale up to 1906. The lime produced was transported by horse and wagon to Brunflo station. During the years 1916-1918 limestone was broken and transported by cable car to the railway station in Tand. The limestone was used to manufacture carbide during the first world war. Otherwise, Jöns likely earned his living by farming and forestry work. (He is titled lumberjack in the census 1941)

The children around 1919 that is bout 8, 9 and 12 years of age:

Inge, Elise och Folke Jönsson ca 1922

In April 1922, Jöns and Mina with children moves from Tand. They settle in a house in Rasten Näs. According to Folke (who was 16 years old the last year they leved there) the house was located in this place.

They lived here for four years. Folke has his confirmation 1923 in Näs. Probably also Elise but I have not seen any proof of this.

Inge does his military service in 1926 and is trained as paramedics. He sits in the center of the image below

In Dec 1926 the family moves back to Tand. Again Tand 5:3 but I don’t know if it is exactly the same place as they lived before. Inge is now 20 years old, Folke 16 and Elise 15.

I’ve ben told that Jöns had a bit of a drinking problem. This had obviously an impact on Folke who became a teetotaler for the rest of his life. The temperance movement was also strong in the district so this might also have contributed.

1928? Folke 1910 och Inge 1911 nr 4 o 5. (Kurt Folkesson)

Both Inge and Folke are titled workers in the records. We know from the picture above they worked at the local saw mill in Tand. They are the two to the right on the picture. Inge is at this time living in an apartment by the Merchant Daniel Danielsson and wife Anna Märta Eliasson (not related despite the name). They have a son, Gunnar that emigrates to Canada in Feb 1929 only 19 years old. Maybe contributing to Inge’s decision to emigrate later the same year.

Two cousins to the children, sons of Olle Alm, emigrated early to Canada. Edwin Albert Alm 1907 and Jöns (John) Alm 1913. John Alm lends Inge the needed money for a ticket to America and the summer 1929 he says farewell to Tand and Sweden and travels to Canada. There he works for John Alm and others in Battleford. He probably had the plan to move back to Sweden but this newer happens. He marries about 1936 with Alma Underdahl, daughter of a neighbor to John Alm. They buy a land area across from her parents place and become farmers.

Probably the last picture of the hole family before Inge left for Canada 1929

Folke makes his military service 1930 but are “relived in peace time” maybe because he was color blind, a eye defect I have inherited from him. The fact that he had a newborn boy to care for might also be a reason. He had met the 8 year older Märta Olofsdotter who was living with her grandmother in Tand and taking care of her. Märta gave birth to a son in Jan 1930 and he was named Gösta Olof. Folke acknowledge being the father. He is not yet of age and are therefore asking for “His Majesty’s approval” to marry. This is approved in June and they marry in Sep 1930.

Elise is recorded with her parents up to 1930. Thereafter I do not know more than that she later meets her becoming husband, Karl-Gustav Håkansson. He works at the sawmill in Lockne and lives with his mother and stepfather at Haxäng no 6 (Ivarssons) in an apartment called “Sjövik”. They get married sometime around 1933 when their first baby is born.

Jöns and Mina lives, as far as I know in the house in Tand up to her death 1945, 66 years of age. Jöns moves later to Stensjö where he dies 1957, 71 years old.

Family Tree as PDF

Working on the story about Jöns Emanuel Eliasson, the father of my grandfather Folke Jönssons. But I have to do a bit more research so you will have to wait at a week or two. Meanwhile you can have a look at the following family trees showing ancestors and descendants in a PDF document. If printed i think it will be several pages that needs gluing together….

It’s really easy to do such a diagram from the database so if you have a specific wish I can start with just any person and produce ancestor or decedents diagram. Give me your name and e-mail in the “leave a comment” field below and I fix it. (This offer is only valid for relatives included in the database so be sure to state your name). In return I expect you to give me additional details of what is wrong or missing…….

A specific question: Where was the following picture taken and when?

Här bodde Jöns Emanuel och Vilhelmina

It is supposed to be the house where Folke (and Inge and Elise) lived as kids. And I know they lived both in Tand and Skute (or close to). Anyone?

Olof August Hansson (English)

Olof August Hansson Diagram

April 20 1901 “the farmers son” Olof August Hansson from Haxäng and “the farmers daughter” Märta Christina Nilsdotter are married. The ceremony is held by pastor J. P. Hörnfeldet according to “both parties verbal consent”.  The customary probation, publicly announcing their intention to marry, is made at church service three sundays before, Mars 24 and 31 and April 14. Märta Christina is nine month pregnant at the ceremony and their son Hans Olof is born three weeks later, May 14.

The couple has already a child, Ida nearly three years old. Ida and her mother Märta Christina have (according to church records) lived at her parents farm in Tand. Olof August is recorded with his parents in Haxäng. But from the date of marriage they are both living in Haxäng.

1900? Märta Christina (Martin Olson Seattle)

1907? Seattle. Olof August. (Margit Svedberg)

Olof August father is dead since 8 years and at the farm lives his mother Elin Märta, his sister Anna Kristina and his brother Erik Arvid. His oldest sister Katarina Juliana, is married to “the tradesman” Jonas Hedman and together with their three children they lives here as well but moves later the same year to an other farm in Haxäng.

The farm is a quarter of the original Haxäng No 3 and is owned by the Olof August, his siblings and his mother in common. The other parts of Haxäng No 3 is in equal shares owned by the local sawmill (Locknesågen), Per Olof Olofsson and Sven Olof Magnusson. The latter a cousin to Olof August.

April 5 1902 the family request and also get the official ownership to the farm inherited from the father,  nine years before. The homestead is in total 3/4 acre and is divided with equal parts to the heirs. The youngest brother Erik Arvid is represented by Watchmaker Per Emanuel Petersson from Stensjö that has been the siblings trustee since the fathers death.

At the same time the mother, Elin Märta Mårtensdotter, is requesting a mortgage on the farm as security for a “födoråd”. The contract is giving her the right toreceive from the farm and its owner, each year, until her death:

  • 300 liters of barley
  • 100 liters rye
  • 400 liters of potato
  • 85 kg timothy hay
  • 4 kg of fresh pork
  • 1 pair of leather shoes
  • Winter and summer food for two sheep
  • Daily 3 liter full-cream milk delivered to the home
  • Access to half of the existing herb garden as well as necessary fertilizer
  • Dry and chopped wood delivered to the home as needed
  • Housing in the entire upper floor of main farm building, and adequate space in celler, baking and brewing house and storehouse
  • Right to transport in necessary matters such as to doctor, church attendance and transportation of grist to and from the mill

The brother Erik Arvid receives 150 kronor as part of the contract.

Haxäng 1941. The main farm building is seen behind the flagpost . Here lived Olof August mother on the upper floor until her death. (The house was teared down 1944)

The farm is later sold to the cousin and neighbor Sven Olof Magnusson who already owns a quarter of Haxäng No 3. He is registered owner 1904 but I’m not sure when it is actually done. I suppose the original plan was that Olof August should take over the farm but the tragic events 1902 changed this.

Olof August pregnant wife is sick in tuberculosis and July 26 1902 she gives birth to a daughter. The baby is born premature and is assumed not to live. Therefore she is “nöddöpt” that is “baptized in emergency”. The ceremony is conducted by the neighbor Brita Christina, wife of Sven Olof Magnusson. Witnesses are the son of the neighbor, Karl Olof and also Anna-Lena Nilsson from Tand, the sister of Märta Christina. The baby girl is named Brita Märta and this is later noted in the church records.

The reason for the premature birth is probably the tuberculosis. It is said her weight was only 800 gram and that she would fit in the palm of a hand. The first time she spent in a shoebox and was fed with sugar water. And many is said to have come to look at the small miracle.

The birth weight might be a bit exaggerated. Quote from Wikipedia “after pregnancy week 32 the baby can use its lungs without help despite a weight of only 1 to 1,5 kg”. In any case it was a miracle she survived at all.

6 days after Brita Märta birth, August 1, her mother dies in tuberculosis. She is only 31 years old. The tuberculosis has already killed two of her sisters, Brita Carolina in February and Margareta Augusta in July, 27 and 20 years old.

Two months after the wife’s death is the inventory list of her belongings recorded. The value of utensils, clothing, furniture, harness and cash is thoroughly noted. Total asset is 322 kr and 50 öre. After deduction of an auction depth (93.30) and burial cost (coffin, 10.-, shroud 3.- and burial 20.-) remains 196 kr and 75 öre. The inventory list is filed at the county court October 17.

January 23 1903 the inheritance is divided. The asset of approximately 200 kr is split with half to the widower and half to the children.

Erik Arvid, the younger brother of Olof August, receives late February a certificate stating he has the means to found a travel to America, including return travel. The certificate is signed by the chairman of the local council as well as his mother. He leaves later the same year (or perhaps during 1904). He receives citizenship in USA August 25 1905.

September 10 1905, the mother Elin Märta, dies 61years old. According to the auction record her belongings, to the value of 377 kr and 29 öre, was sold. Mars 21 1906 the inheritance is divided. Erik Arvid has come home from America so all are present when the total asset of 2854 kr and 32 öre is equally divided amongst the four children.

The farm, now owned by Sven Olof Magnusson, is sold to his son Sven August. He has been in America since 1901 but comes back home 1905 to marry Anna Selma Josefina Edholm from Änge. He has take the family name Lundstam and the homestead is hereafter called “Lundstams”. (The main building that probably is from 18th century is teared down 1944).

Olof August now plans with his brother to emigrate to America. The two daughters Ida and Märta, nine and three years old, are put in care with their grandparents in Tand and the son Hans, four years old, moves to the crofter Anders Jansson i Haxäng. The reason to why Hans is not moving to his grandparents is probably that they have also taken a cousin to the children, Nils Alexis Nilsson four years old, in care as well. He was the son of their daughter Brita Carolina, a teacher in Rätan, who also died in tuberculosis. Alexis father left for America in 1903.

In Mars 1906 Olof August leaves his three children and starts the travel to Seattle. He travels together with his brother Erik Arvid. According to Arvid’s travel documents, signed Mars 28, they leave Trondheim with boat to Hull England. From there by train to Liverpool and then by boat to Boston. From Boston to Seattle by train. The price for the journey is 318 kr. This includes food and accomodation. Olof August writes a letter to his daughters posted in Boston April 13. He writes that the travel over the Atlantic Ocean took 9 days. Departure from Trondheim must therefor have been on Mars 28 or shortly thereafter.

Brev från Olaf Hansson till döttrarna

There is a story told about Arvid that when he left Sweden the first time in 1903 he had not made his military service and that some day before he was to leave again in 1906 the police authority in Brunflo “Länsman” made preparations for his arrest. The order to execute this when to the deputy police “Fjärdingsman” Per Olof Olofsson in Haxäng. He was the neighbor of Olof August and he came over to Arvid and told he had the order to make an arrest and that he would do this next day. So they had to pack and leave during the night or early next day.  By horse carriage the went to Grytan which was the next train stop after Brunflo and from there left for Trondheim. “Länsman” is said to have searched the train in Brunflo.

A wery similar story is told about Albert in Bleka, that later married Olof August sister Ida. Albert left Sweden first time in 1908, 18 years old. He came back 1912 together with his brother Erik. He is also said to have received a message about arrest “tomorrow” and hastily left for Järpen and train to Trondheim.

Ida, Han och Märta ca 1916

Ida, Han och Märta ca 1916

Ida and Märta grows up in Tand. The children’s grandfather , Nils Olof Johansson dies in 1922 and the year after Ida, now 25 years old, emigrate to her father in Seattle. She has told her son Martin that she had to work for her aunts Gertru-Lisa and Ann-Lena. “thy where not kind to her”. Ida travels together with Anna Ottolina Alfredsson, 22 years old, also from Tand. There is a Per Mikael Persson, 44 years old, that is from the same farm and he emigrates about the same time and is probably traveling with the girls.

Ida marries in America with Albert Olofsson from Bleka. He is by the way her second cousin (their respective fathers where cousins).

Märta, 21 years old stays and takes care of her grandmother until her death 1929. She then marries Folke Jönsson from Tand.

The son Hans grows up in Haxäng and marries 1932 with Ingeborg Magnusson from Sundsjö. He has then already a son, Rune, born 1920. Hans was 1919 working as a clerk with the builders of the inland railroad. In Ytterhogdal, where the final part was built, he met Ada Vilhelmina Nyman. Both are 18 years old when Rune is born, spring 1920. Rune grew up in Flor Ytterhogdal.
