The small farm is located at Tand no 5, probably Tand 5:3 that is here.

Jöns is six years younger than Mina. He is 21 years old when Inge is born and Mina is 27. In his parents’ home lives also his brother Anders and his wife (according to church records), but they are moving, perhaps directly after the marriage in June, to Jukkasjärvi.

Jöns was before Inge’s birth employed by the army. He took early enlistment and became, simultaneously with his brother Anders a volunteer in Feb 1903 at the Royal Jämtland Field Ranger Regiment with an assignment of three years from November 1903 to October 1906. His two oldest brothers, Olof and Göran also enlisted so all the brothers followed the same path. Olof (Olle) and Göran got the soldier names Alm and Palm which they kept as family names. Jöns and Anders both resigned in December 1906 at that time of Inge’s birth. Jöns was noted as worker, later as farm worker in the church records.

Mina grow up in a “better” home. Her father is Farmer and in the home is the local junior school located. His mother is the daughter of Sergeant Linderström and Wilhelmina Omnberg, who’s father, grandfather and grand grandfather were all priests. Also on her fathers father side we find “better” people, his grandmother is of the Wasell family where we have direct descendant of a priest, a district judge and a customs inspector.

The following year, August 20 1908, a second son is born. He is weak and suffering from some sort of stomach illness. September 1, he is baptized by the teacher Gertrud Jönsson and given the name Gunnar Folke Elis. He dies two days later, September 3. The reason the teacher Gertrud is called for this emergency baptism is, I guess, because junior school in Tand is occasionally held at Minas parents farm not far from home. So she would be well known by the family. Perhaps that’s where she was the weeks after birth.

Next son is born Jan 4 1910. He is named Elis Folke, almost the same name as the baby they lost the year before.

The year after, Jan 31 1911 they get a daughter. She is baptized Ingrid Brita Elisabeth but will later always be called Elise. Present at the ceremony is Mina’s parents Johan Olof Johansson and Brita Stina.

Several of Jöns and Minas closest relatives live nearby. His parents are living at the same farm as they. He has also three sisters and three brothers. The two oldest brothers, Olle Alm and Göran Palm we find in Bjärme and Anders, mentioned before, is now back from Jukkasjärvi and living in Tand. The sisters are all married. The oldest sister Helena is living in Åre, Elisabeth (Lisa) in Rödön and Kristina in Tand. The latter has five sons, the olders, Per Emanuel later becomes a journalist and writer with family name Tannér.

Minas parents live at their farm in Tand. There are also two of her sisters and two brothers, all unmarried. The third sister is married and living in Offerdal.

1914 the father of Jöns, Elias Olofsson dies, 72 years old. His mother stays on the farm until 1921 when she moves to her daughter Kristina’s family

Jöns brother Anders, also living in Tand, dies tragically 1915. He “suffered setbacks and took his own life” as his oldest brother Olle Alm has stated. In the church records there is a note that Anders on Feb 2 1915 “killed himself with a pistol, with a shot through his hart”

September 4, 1917 Mina gives birth to a son. He is probably premature because Mina is at this time not at home. I do not know where exactly, but the child is baptized “in emergency” just one week old on September 11 by the farmer Per Nord in Österskucku, Berg. The child who is given the name Johan Gunnar dies one day later, September 12. Birth and death dates are noted in Berg church records.

Jöns is said to have worked with lime production. There were two early stationary lime kilns in Tand where lime was burned in relatively large scale up to 1906. The lime produced was transported by horse and wagon to Brunflo station. During the years 1916-1918 limestone was broken and transported by cable car to the railway station in Tand. The limestone was used to manufacture carbide during the first world war. Otherwise, Jöns likely earned his living by farming and forestry work. (He is titled lumberjack in the census 1941)

The children around 1919 that is bout 8, 9 and 12 years of age:

In April 1922, Jöns and Mina with children moves from Tand. Again Tand 5:3 but I don’t know if it is exactly the same place as they lived before. Inge is now 20 years old, Folke 16 and Elise 15.

I’ve ben told that Jöns had a bit of a drinking problem. This had obviously an impact on Folke who became a teetotaler for the rest of his life. The temperance movement was also strong in the district so this might also have contributed.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignleft size-large wp-image-297" alt="1928? We know from the picture above they worked at the local saw mill in Tand. They are the two to the right on the picture. Inge is at this time living in an apartment by the Merchant Daniel Danielsson and wife Anna Märta Eliasson (not related despite the name). They have a son, Gunnar that emigrates to Canada in Feb 1929 only 19 years old. Maybe contributing to Inge’s decision to emigrate later the same year.

Two cousins to the children, sons of Olle Alm, emigrated early to Canada. Edwin Albert Alm 1907 and Jöns (John) Alm 1913. John Alm lends Inge the needed money for a ticket to America and the summer 1929 he says farewell to Tand and Sweden and travels to Canada. There he works for John Alm and others in Battleford. He probably had the plan to move back to Sweden but this newer happens. He marries about 1936 with Alma Underdahl, daughter of a neighbor to John Alm. They buy a land area across from her parents place and become farmers.

Probably the last picture of the hole family before Inge left for Canada 1929

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-299" class="size-large wp-image-299" alt="Medpassagerare på båten till Amerika. The fact that he had a newborn boy to care for might also be a reason. He had met the 8 year older Märta Olofsdotter who was living with her grandmother in Tand and taking care of her. Märta gave birth to a son in Jan 1930 and he was named Gösta Olof. Folke acknowledge being the father. He is not yet of age and are therefore asking for “His Majesty’s approval” to marry. This is approved in June and they marry in Sep 1930.

Elise is recorded with her parents up to 1930. Thereafter I do not know more than that she later meets her becoming husband, Karl-Gustav Håkansson. He works at the sawmill in Lockne and lives with his mother and stepfather at Haxäng no 6 (Ivarssons) in an apartment called “Sjövik”. They get married sometime around 1933 when their first baby is born.

Jöns and Mina lives, as far as I know in the house in Tand up to her death 1945, 66 years of age.
